Owl & Buckeye Canyon Restoration
Volunteers restoring Buckeye Canyon. The coastal grasslands of Owl and Buckeye Canyon are home to the endangered Mission Blue (Icaricia icarioides missionensis) and Callippe Silverspot (Speyeria callippe callippe) butterflies. San Bruno Mountain Watch conducts invasive plant species removal in an effort to restore this native grassland. Restoration efforts are focused on protecting the larval host plants of the Mission Blue and Callippe Silverspot butterflies, such as perennial Lupine species (Lupinus albifrons, L. formosus, L. variicolor) and California Golden Violet (Viola pedunculata). Volunteers remove invasive species such as scabiosa, French broom, wild radish, wild mustard, Italian thistle, English plantain, poison hemlock, Ehrharta grass, cotoneaster, bristly ox tongue, filaree, and velvet grass.
